Apple has temporarily suspended its AI-generated notification summaries for news and entertainment applications in the latest iOS 18.3 developer beta. This decision follows instances where the feature produced incorrect summaries, notably misrepresenting content from reputable sources.
The notification summary feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, was designed to condense multiple notifications into concise recaps. However, inaccuracies have led to misleading information being presented to users. For example, the AI erroneously summarized a report suggesting a critical incident that was not factual.
In light of these issues, Apple has announced plans to re-enable the notification summaries in a future software update after making necessary improvements. In the interim, the iOS 18.3 beta will clearly indicate that the notification summary feature is in beta and may contain errors. Additionally, users will have the option to disable notifications for specific apps directly from the lock screen or Notification Center by swiping, tapping ‘Options,’ and selecting ‘Turn Off Summaries.’ To differentiate between summaries and standard notifications, the lock screen will now display italicized text for summaries.
This pause comes amid broader concerns about the reliability of AI-generated content. Apple’s move reflects a commitment to ensuring that its AI features provide accurate and trustworthy information to users. The company encourages users to report any unexpected notification summaries to help refine the feature during its beta phase.
