New Delhi: In a landmark move to enhance the institutional commitment to employee well-being, especially for women, the Department of Legal Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, has inaugurated the ‘Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh’ — a specially designed health and wellness space dedicated exclusively to women staff members. Located within the Shastri Bhawan premises in New Delhi, the initiative reflects the Ministry’s forward-looking approach to workplace inclusivity, fitness, and dignity.
The state-of-the-art facility was formally inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, in the presence of Law Secretary Dr. Anju Rathi Rana, senior officials of the Ministry, and a large group of enthusiastic women employees. The inauguration ceremony was marked by a ribbon-cutting event, unveiling of a commemorative plaque, and a guided tour of the newly developed space.
A Symbolic and Practical Shift in Workplace Culture
The Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh has been meticulously developed by converting an unused garage space into a dynamic wellness hub. It houses modern fitness equipment, a private lactation room for nursing mothers, and other amenities aimed at fostering a holistic health culture among women employees. Beyond physical health, the space is designed to encourage mental wellness, self-care, and work-life balance.
Speaking at the inauguration, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal commended the Department for pioneering such a unique and much-needed initiative. He connected the effort with the broader national fitness movement by stating, “This is a powerful step in line with Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Hum Fit Toh India Fit’ campaign. A healthy workplace begins with healthy individuals, and it is vital that women in government services feel empowered to prioritise their wellness.”
Empowerment Through Self-Care
Addressing the gathering, Law Secretary Dr. Anju Rathi Rana delved into the emotional and cultural significance of the initiative. “Women often shoulder dual responsibilities — professional and personal — and in the process, their own well-being is frequently neglected. The Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh serves as a daily reminder that self-care is a right, not a luxury. When women are supported in caring for themselves, the entire ecosystem thrives,” she said.
Dr. Rana reaffirmed the Department’s ongoing commitment to an inclusive, empathetic, and supportive work culture, adding that further steps would be taken to replicate such spaces across other departments and ministries.
Transforming Government Workspaces
This initiative signals a quiet but progressive transformation of government workspaces. Rather than being seen only as centers of bureaucratic operation, ministries and departments are now evolving into human-centered institutions. The Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh embodies this shift — one that integrates dignity, empathy, and well-being into the daily experience of public service.
By aligning itself with the goals of the Fit India Movement and the broader vision of ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India), the Department of Legal Affairs is setting a precedent for other ministries to adopt similar wellness-centric approaches.
This initiative is not just a wellness room — it is a statement. A statement that values women’s health, acknowledges the challenges of modern work-life, and promotes equal opportunity and care at the highest levels of governance.
