New Delhi – The Kargil Vijay Diwas 26th anniversary commemoration witnessed the Indian Army leading the nation in honoring the valour and supreme sacrifice of soldiers during the 1999 Kargil War. The central event, held at the iconic Kargil War Memorial in Dras over two days, demonstrated the country’s unwavering commitment to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice for national sovereignty.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations were graced by distinguished dignitaries including Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, Hon’ble Minister of Labour & Employment and Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports; Shri Sanjay Seth, Hon’ble Minister of State for Defence; Shri Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh; and General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff. Their presence underscored the national significance of this solemn occasion.

Emotional Tribute to Fallen Heroes

The Kargil Vijay Diwas commemoration included the lighting of 545 lamps in memory of each fallen hero, creating a powerful visual tribute that illuminated the memorial with the spirit of sacrifice. This poignant gesture during Kargil Vijay Diwas represented not just numbers but individual stories of courage, dedication, and ultimate sacrifice for the motherland.

In an unprecedented gesture of inclusion, the Army reached out to families of all 545 martyrs across India and Nepal during Kargil Vijay Diwas, ensuring that no family was forgotten in this national remembrance. The felicitation of Veer Naris and Next of Kin formed a central part of the Kargil Vijay Diwas ceremonies, acknowledging their immense sacrifices and ongoing courage.

General Upendra Dwivedi inaugurated significant legacy projects during Kargil Vijay Diwas that will ensure the continued remembrance of the Kargil heroes. The Indus Viewpoint, located in the Batalik sector, offers visitors a strategic view of the Indus River entering Pakistan-occupied Baltistan, promoting Battle Area Tourism and connecting civilians with the battlefield geography.

The e-Shradhanjali portal launched during Kargil Vijay Diwas enables citizens nationwide to pay virtual tributes to Kargil martyrs, fostering broader participation in remembrance activities. Additionally, the QR-based Audio Gateway provides visitors to the War Memorial with tech-enabled historical narratives through digital devices, making the Kargil Vijay Diwas legacy accessible to younger generations.

Two-Day Comprehensive Commemoration

The Kargil Vijay Diwas events began on July 25 with a Battle Briefing and Remembrance Ceremony at Lamochen Viewpoint in Dras. Veterans and serving personnel recounted their experiences overlooking the same peaks where the Kargil conflict was fought, supported by stirring audio-visual presentations that brought battlefield stories to life.

The evening ‘Shaurya Sandhya’ programme during Kargil Vijay Diwas commenced with ‘Gaurav Gatha’ performed by the Army band, narrating tales of heroism through music. Main Ceremony and National Leadership

The main Kargil Vijay Diwas event on July 26 commenced with the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Kargil War Memorial. The distinguished gathering led the nation in paying homage to the martyrs, with the haunting notes of the “Last Post” reverberating through the valley, evoking powerful emotions and deep remembrance.

General Dwivedi highlighted the development of ‘Rudra’ all arms brigades, ‘Bhairav’ light commando battalions, ‘Shaktibaan’ artillery regiments, and ‘Divyastra’ batteries, along with drone-equipped infantry battalions and indigenous air defense systems.

The capability display during Kargil Vijay Diwas showcased cutting-edge indigenous technologies in mobility, surveillance, and firepower under the theme “Tech Absorption: Imbibe, Innovate, Integrate.” This demonstration underscored the Army’s drive towards modernization and self-reliance, particularly for high-altitude warfare scenarios.

Nationwide Outreach Initiative

A landmark initiative during this Kargil Vijay Diwas involved 37 Indian Army teams visiting the Next of Kin of all 545 Bravehearts across 27 States, two Union Territories, and Nepal. This special outreach drive brought solace and rekindled pride among the families, ensuring that the spirit of Kargil Vijay Diwas reached every corner of the nation.

The #OnThisDay campaign recreated major battles of the Kargil War through digital storytelling to spread awareness among youth, making Kargil Vijay Diwas relevant for new generations. Adventure and cultural activities organized across Kargil, Dras, and Batalik sectors drew enthusiastic participation from locals, students, veterans, and community members.

Vision for Future India

The Kargil Vijay Diwas address emphasized the Army’s role in national building, particularly in border infrastructure, tourism, economy, and veteran welfare, affirming the soldier’s enduring contribution to building Viksit Bharat by 2047. General Dwivedi called upon youth to serve the nation with honesty and dedication, closing with a resolute commitment to safeguarding India’s unity, sovereignty, and honor.
