Maharashtra’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Dhananjay Munde, is facing political heat following the murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district. The incident, which took place on December 9, 2024, has sparked a major controversy, with allegations of extortion and political involvement emerging.
According to reports, Deshmukh was abducted and murdered after opposing an extortion attempt linked to a windmill company. The arrest of Walmik Karad, a close aide of Munde, in connection with the case has intensified calls for the minister’s resignation.
Munde Questions Political Targeting
Amid the growing pressure, Munde has questioned the politicization of the issue, asking,
“Is my resignation more important than ensuring justice for the Deshmukh family?”
He emphasized that his priority remains justice for the victim’s family and accused the opposition of using the tragedy for political gains.
Ready to Resign if Ordered by Leadership
Despite the controversy, Munde has maintained his innocence, stating that he will resign only if asked to do so by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis or Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
“If my leadership believes I am guilty, they should ask for my resignation. I am ready to step down,” Munde said in a statement.
Political Fallout and Public Reactions
The incident has deepened political tensions in Maharashtra, with opposition parties demanding accountability and a fair investigation. Meanwhile, supporters of Munde, including Vanjari community leader Namdev Shastri, have backed the minister, claiming he is being unfairly targeted.
As the investigation progresses, Munde continues to assert that the focus should be on justice for Deshmukh’s family rather than on political maneuvering.
