A 21-year-old engineering student was arrested in Kolkata on Wednesday for allegedly raping his classmate after luring her to an empty apartment. The incident occurred on December 21 but surfaced only after the survivor shared her ordeal with her parents.
According to the Kolkata police, the accused invited the woman to an unoccupied flat owned by a friend, where he allegedly spiked her drink and sexually assaulted her. The police registered a case after the survivor reported the incident on Tuesday.
“The accused was summoned for questioning and, after a nightlong interrogation, was taken into custody,” police officials told. The owner of the flat, a friend of the accused, has also been summoned for questioning.
The accused and the survivor reportedly had a strained relationship following a disagreement prior to the incident. Investigations are ongoing, with police collecting additional evidence to strengthen the case.
This case has drawn parallels to another recent incident involving the sexual assault of an engineering student on the campus of Chennai’s Anna University by a biryani vendor.
Unrelated Double Murder in Nagpur
In an unrelated case, a 25-year-old engineering student in Nagpur, Maharashtra, was arrested for allegedly murdering his parents over disputes related to his education. The accused, Utkarsh Dhakhole, killed his mother by strangulation and fatally stabbed his father after an argument about his academic failures.
The decomposed bodies were discovered on Wednesday after neighbors alerted authorities due to a foul smell. Utkarsh reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
These back-to-back incidents highlight the increasing need for mental health support and robust safety measures for students across the country.
