Bengaluru: In a major stride toward enhancing India’s maritime and coastal security infrastructure, the Indian Navy has signed a significant contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru for the implementation of the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) Project. The contract, finalized on 8 July 2025, was signed in the presence of Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, and Shri Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of BEL.
Key Highlights of the NMDA Project:
-
Integrated Maritime Surveillance:
The NMDA project aims to create a comprehensive system for data collation, analysis, and real-time information sharing among all maritime stakeholders, thereby enhancing India’s ability to monitor, detect, and respond to maritime threats effectively. -
Upgrade to NMDA Network:
The contract involves upgrading the existing National Command, Control, Communication, and Intelligence (NC3I) Network into a more robust and technologically advanced NMDA Network. -
Incorporation of AI and Cutting-edge Technologies:
The upgraded system will incorporate Artificial Intelligence-enabled software for smarter threat detection, automated data analysis, and quicker response mechanisms. This integration will significantly improve the Navy’s ability to maintain situational awareness across vast maritime zones. -
Modernization of IMAC:
The Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) located in Gurugram, which currently functions as the nerve center of NC3I operations, will be transformed into a Multi-Agency NMDA Centre. This will include representatives from multiple national security and intelligence agencies, fostering enhanced inter-agency coordination. -
Turnkey Execution by BEL:
BEL, a premier Indian defense public sector undertaking, will execute the NMDA project on a Turnkey Basis, ensuring end-to-end delivery—from system design and installation to commissioning and training. -
Strategic Importance:
This project is a significant leap toward securing India’s 12 nautical mile territorial waters, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and strategic shipping lanes, crucial for trade, energy supplies, and national security.
Broader Implications of this initiative by Indian Navy:
The NMDA project aligns with India’s broader maritime doctrine and Vision SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region). By strengthening real-time surveillance and inter-agency collaboration, India aims to ensure safe seas, thwart maritime terrorism, combat smuggling, and protect maritime resources more effectively.
This step also reflects India’s growing emphasis on indigenous defense technology, with BEL taking the lead in deploying AI-based security architecture—a testament to Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in defense capabilities.
