New Delhi: In a celebration of India’s rich intangible cultural heritage, the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) hosted a special screening of its new documentary film, “Kan-Kan Mein Ram”, on July 23, 2025, at the INTACH Multipurpose Hall, New Delhi. The event witnessed the esteemed presence of Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, along with cultural scholars, officials, and invited dignitaries.
Delivering the keynote address after the screening, Shri Shekhawat lauded the film as “not only a visual masterpiece but also a cultural compendium of universal values embedded in the Ramayana.” He emphasized that the documentary transcends religious boundaries by presenting the Ramayana as a living tradition—one that continues to inspire Indian identity through centuries.
He acknowledged INTACH’s longstanding contribution to India’s cultural renaissance, stating, “INTACH has been pivotal in documenting and conserving our civilizational legacy, especially through projects like the Ganga Cultural Documentation Project.” Reflecting on his previous tenure in the Jal Shakti Ministry, he praised INTACH’s meticulous efforts in mapping and preserving the cultural ethos of the Ganga river basin.
Shri Ashok Singh Thakur, Chairman of INTACH, and Shri Ravindra Singh, IAS (Retd.), Member Secretary, INTACH, welcomed the Minister and guests to the event. Shri Thakur elaborated on INTACH’s multi-faceted role in preserving India’s tangible, intangible, and natural heritage, and highlighted their work with schools, artisans, and publications to promote heritage awareness at all levels.
A Tapestry of India’s Performing Arts
The documentary “Kan-Kan Mein Ram” explores the diverse representations of the Ramayana across India, particularly through its performing arts. It features a rich array of traditional art forms such as:
-
Yakshagana and Uppinakudru Puppetry from Karnataka
-
Lanka Podi Yatra and Ravan Chhaya from Odisha
-
Sattriya Traditions from Assam
-
Mewati Bhapang Performances
-
The spiritual expressions of the Ramnami Samaj in Chhattisgarh
Through these varied lenses, the film showcases how the idea of Ram lives in every corner (Kan-Kan) of India—infused in music, movement, ritual, and memory.
The film posits that the eternal essence of Lord Ram, reflected in diverse cultural forms, is not confined to religious interpretation but belongs to the universal consciousness of humanity. This message, according to INTACH, is more relevant than ever in today’s times.
A Testament to Cultural Continuity
The release of “Kan-Kan Mein Ram” reinforces INTACH’s four-decade-long mission of celebrating and safeguarding India’s civilizational ethos. The documentary stands as a vibrant testament to India’s living traditions and the shared cultural values that connect generations across geography and time.
