Kota, 7 July 2025 — In response to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s environmental initiative, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and Van Mahotsav (Forest Festival) in Kota, Rajasthan. The event began with a tree plantation drive in the Mukundra sanctuary area on Rawatbhata Road, symbolizing a strong commitment to environmental conservation.
Shri Om Birla called upon citizens to take collective responsibility to protect the environment, urging them to act as guardians of nature. Emphasizing people’s power in bringing about change, he envisioned transforming Kota into the cleanest, most beautiful, and greenest city in India through public participation.
Addressing Rising Air Pollution
During his address, Shri Birla expressed deep concern over the rising Air Quality Index (AQI) in Kota, stating that protecting the environment is a moral responsibility, especially to ensure a healthy future for children. Recalling Rajasthan’s rich cultural tradition of nature worship, he stated:
“Our ancestors sacrificed their lives for trees; today, what we need is not sacrifice, but strong will and action.”
Encouraging Youth and Educational Institutions
To embed environmental consciousness from an early age, Shri Birla urged teachers to encourage students to participate in tree plantation drives and care for the saplings they plant.
This, he said, would spark a healthy competition among youth for environmental protection, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s Mission LiFE (LiFEStyle For Environment), which promotes sustainable living.
Highlighting Local Environmental Heroes
Recognizing the efforts of ordinary citizens, Shri Om Birla lauded Shri Bajarang Lal, a resident of Kota, who has single-handedly planted and maintained numerous roadside trees. Calling him a real-life environmental hero, Shri Birla said his actions reflect the spirit of dedication needed from every citizen.
During the ceremony, forest department officials and individuals who have made outstanding contributions to afforestation and environmental conservation were felicitated for their service.
Massive Participation and Tree Plantation Drive
The Van Mahotsav celebration saw an overwhelming response from local citizens, volunteers, and social organizations.
-
10,000 saplings were planted at the Mukundra sanctuary venue.
-
An additional 25,000 trees were planted across Kota district, with widespread community involvement.
The tree plantation event not only served as an ecological intervention but also reinforced a sense of ownership and emotional connection with nature among the people of Kota.
Conclusion
The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, launched under the larger framework of Van Mahotsav and Mission LiFE, represents a collective awakening towards climate responsibility and environmental stewardship. With active citizen participation and governmental support, the initiative is poised to set a new benchmark in green urban development and sustainable living in India.
