Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav recently emphasized that urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state must become financially self-reliant. He explained that if these bodies can increase their revenue generation, it will significantly enhance the implementation of public welfare programs across the state.
Speaking during a video conference with the All India Council of Mayors, Yadav highlighted the critical role urban bodies play in strengthening the democratic process. He reassured the mayors that the state government is committed to supporting urban bodies’ growth, and they will take necessary steps based on the mayors’ suggestions to foster development.
“We will be pleased when urban bodies are financially independent and operate on their own systems,” said Yadav. He urged the urban bodies to explore new income avenues and devise innovative solutions to boost their financial sustainability.
In recent years, the financial dependency of urban local bodies on state and central funding has posed significant challenges, limiting their ability to implement effective public works. By diversifying revenue sources, ULBs will gain more autonomy, enabling them to improve infrastructure and services, benefiting the people of Madhya Pradesh.
As part of the ongoing efforts to support ULBs, the state is promoting initiatives aimed at strengthening financial management and administrative capabilities. By focusing on these critical areas, Madhya Pradesh seeks to empower its urban bodies and ensure the efficient delivery of essential services.
