Maharashtra Government Mandates All-Day Republic Day Celebrations in Schools

Despite the opposition, the state government aims to make Republic Day a more meaningful and educational experience for students, fostering a deeper understanding of the nation's heritage and values.

Breaking News

In a significant change, Republic Day will no longer be a mere holiday in Maharashtra schools. The state government has announced that students across the state must engage in a full day of activities designed to instill national pride, shifting away from the traditional flag-hoisting followed by a brief celebration.

All-Day Celebrations and Patriotic Activities

The Maharashtra School Education Department issued a circular on Tuesday directing both government and private schools to organize day-long events that will include a variety of competitions centered on patriotic themes. Starting from Republic Day 2025, students will participate in activities that promote a deeper connection to India’s history, culture, and future.

The circular outlines eight mandatory activities, including a ‘Prabhat Pheri’ (morning march) after flag-hoisting, elocution, poetry, drawing, essay writing, dancing, sports competitions, and an exhibition. All events must focus on celebrating national pride and unity. District education officers and inspectors are tasked with ensuring schools adhere to the directive.

Controversy and Criticism

The decision has drawn criticism from some educators. Teacher activist Bhausaheb Chaskar expressed concern over the growing number of events that compete for students’ time and attention. “Students are already overwhelmed with the various celebrations taking place in schools. These events sometimes clash with the curriculum,” he said, questioning the need for dedicating an entire day to Republic Day celebrations when schools already observe the day with various activities.

Despite the opposition, the state government aims to make Republic Day a more meaningful and educational experience for students, fostering a deeper understanding of the nation’s heritage and values.
