A 50-year-old man, Shailendra Mahendra Singh, was sentenced to one year in prison for assaulting an on-duty police officer in Navi Mumbai in 2015. The court in Thane district also imposed a fine of Rs.4,500 on the accused, who resides in Nerul, Navi Mumbai.
The incident took place on April 25, 2015, when the accused, riding a motorbike, obstructed a car driven by Anagha Vivek Kale and her friends. After blocking their path, he verbally abused them. Kale then called the police for help. Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Hire, along with his team, responded to the call, but the accused continued his abusive behavior and threatened the officers. Singh physically assaulted the Inspector before being subdued by other officers and arrested.
Singh was charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).
After hearing the case, Additional Sessions Judge K R Deshpande confirmed that the prosecution had proven all charges against Singh. The judge sentenced him to concurrent prison terms, the longest being one year. The court also directed that Rs.3,000 from the fine be given to the complainant, Kale, and Rs.1,000 to Inspector Hire.
The case was supported by testimonies from five witnesses, according to the prosecution.
