As the fiscal year 2024-25 approaches its conclusion, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is intensifying efforts to recover outstanding property taxes. With a target of Rs.900 crore, the civic body has so far collected Rs.617 crore. To bridge the gap, NMMC has issued notices to approximately 8,000 defaulters with dues exceeding ₹1 lakh each. Among these, properties of 33 major defaulters have been attached due to non-compliance, resulting in the recovery of Rs.5.12 crore from 10 individuals.
Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde emphasized the importance of property tax as the primary revenue source for maintaining and enhancing city services. He stated, “Property tax is the main source to provide quality services in the city, and hence it is the responsibility of all to cooperate and abide by their duty of paying tax.”
A notable case involves a prominent housing society in Nerul, which has accumulated dues totaling Rs.5.32 crore. This society comprises 68 commercial properties, each owing over Rs.1 lakh. The NMMC has appointed a confiscation officer to attach these properties and has warned that if dues remain unpaid within five days of seizure, the properties will be auctioned to recover the outstanding amount.
In addition to property attachment, the NMMC is considering further measures against major defaulters, such as disconnecting water supply to housing societies and establishments with significant arrears. Commissioner Shinde urged defaulters to settle their dues promptly to avoid stringent actions.
In a related development, the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) has also intensified its crackdown on property tax defaulters. The PMC has issued 447 pre-seizure notices and 27 warrants to attach properties of defaulters within its jurisdiction. This move has prompted some defaulters to clear their dues, while others are contesting the tax levied with retrospective effect.
Both municipal corporations are taking decisive steps to ensure compliance and bolster revenue collection, underscoring the critical role of property taxes in funding essential civic services and infrastructure development.
