In Udaipur, over 220 individuals fell ill after attending a mass wedding in Dhanmandi. The sudden influx of patients overwhelmed the MB Hospital, prompting authorities to set up an emergency ward to accommodate the sick. Dr. R.L. Suman, the hospital superintendent, stated that they initially received around 30 patients, but the number surged past 200 within an hour. Although most patients were discharged after treatment, a 15-year-old girl remains in critical condition, receiving care in the pediatric ICU.
According to medical staff, the symptoms included severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, typical signs of food poisoning. The hospital deployed additional medical teams to manage the crisis effectively. Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Omprakash Raipuria noted that women and children, due to their generally lower immunity, were the most affected.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaos as people started collapsing shortly after consuming the food. Ram Rathore, one of the affected individuals, described his experience: “After eating, I felt dizzy and nauseous, followed by continuous vomiting.” Many reported severe reactions after consuming sweets and traditional dishes served at the event.
The mass wedding feast reportedly catered to nearly 6,000 guests from Udaipur and neighboring districts. The large turnout at both the event and subsequently at the hospital created additional challenges in managing the situation. Police teams were deployed to control the crowd and maintain order within hospital premises.
In a separate but similar incident in Bharatpur’s Gazipur village, around 60 people suffered from food poisoning after attending another wedding celebration. Medical teams responded swiftly, and 17 severely affected individuals were admitted to a hospital in Nadbai.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the food contamination. Food samples from both events have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis, with officials expecting conclusive reports soon. The findings will be crucial in identifying any lapses in food preparation or hygiene standards.
This incident highlights the urgent need for stricter food safety protocols at large gatherings, especially mass weddings that serve thousands of guests. Ensuring proper food handling, storage, and hygiene can prevent such health emergencies in the future.
