A devastating tragedy unfolded near Morocco when a boat carrying migrants attempting to reach Spain capsized, claiming the lives of at least 50 people, including more than 40 Pakistanis. According to reports from the Pakistani authorities and the migrant rights group Walking Borders, the boat had set off from Mauritania on January 2 with 86 migrants on board, including 66 Pakistani nationals.
The incident occurred close to the Moroccan coast, near the port of Dakhla. Moroccan authorities rescued 36 people from the ill-fated vessel a day earlier, while they fear that the remainder of the passengers, including most of the Pakistani migrants, have drowned. Walking Borders’ CEO Helena Maleno confirmed that a significant number of those presumed dead were from Pakistan. Maleno also highlighted the passengers’ harrowing 13-day journey without any rescue efforts, which added to their suffering.
The Pakistani Foreign Office responded quickly, issuing a statement and assuring the public that its embassy in Morocco is in constant communication with local authorities to coordinate rescue operations. In addition, a team from the embassy was sent to Dakhla to assist the survivors and support the recovery efforts for the deceased. The Foreign Ministry also activated its Crisis Management Unit to provide necessary assistance.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has instructed government agencies to offer all available help to the victims and their families, reaffirming the government’s commitment to assisting those affected by the tragedy.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his profound sorrow over the incident, condemning the act of human trafficking that led to the loss of so many lives. In a statement, Sharif condemned the illegal practice and assured the nation that authorities would take strict action against human traffickers who exploit vulnerable citizens. The Prime Minister also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to coordinate with Moroccan authorities, ensure that the missing persons are located, assist the survivors, and facilitate the return of the remains of the deceased.
Sharif expressed his shock and grief on social media, describing the tragedy as deeply disturbing. He reassured the public that the government would continue to take strong measures against those involved in such illegal activities.
The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross perilous waters in search of better opportunities, often falling victim to human traffickers who exploit their desperation. The Pakistani government has vowed to intensify efforts to prevent such tragedies in the future and to support those affected by this heart-wrenching incident.
