A pub in Pune, Maharashtra, is facing significant backlash after sending unusual invitations for its New Year’s Eve party. ‘High Spirits Cafe’ allegedly included condoms and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets in goodie bags sent to regular customers, sparking outrage on social media.
The invite, which was part of a larger safety initiative by the pub, was meant to address issues like drink-driving and unsafe sexual practices. The pub’s management sent out a package to around 40 of its regular patrons, which also included a safety advisory urging guests to use helmets, stay hydrated, and avoid drinking and driving. Additionally, the pub provided some guests with helmets, alongside the condoms and ORS packets.
The situation escalated when one guest posted a photo of the goodie bag on Facebook, which led to public outrage. This prompted the local police to intervene, record statements from invitees, and issue notices to the pub management. Authorities are now investigating the matter following a complaint from Maharashtra Youth Congress general secretary Akshay Jain. Jain expressed his disapproval of what he described as a “cheap publicity stunt,” urging the authorities to take strict action.
In response to the controversy, ‘High Spirits Cafe’ clarified that the intention behind the unusual gift was to promote responsible partying. Manager Zaid Khan explained that the theme for this year’s New Year’s party was “party responsibly,” with a focus on safety. He emphasized that the items, including the condoms and ORS, were part of an effort to address common issues like unprotected sex and the dangers of drinking and driving. Khan also highlighted that the pub is offering a one-way cab ride to encourage guests to avoid driving after drinking.
Despite the pub’s explanation, the controversy continues to stir debate over the appropriateness of the promotional material.
