KOLKATA: Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Arun Roy, celebrated for his works ‘Bagha Jatin’ and ‘Hiralal’, passed away on Thursday morning at the age of 56. He had been battling esophageal cancer for over a year and succumbed to a severe lung infection at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Arun Roy, born Arunava Raychaudhuri, made a significant impact on Bengali cinema with his debut film ‘Hiralal’ in 2021, which received widespread acclaim for its compelling storytelling. He continued to explore historical narratives with ‘8/12 Binoy Badal Dinesh’ in 2022. His most recent work, ‘Bagha Jatin’ (2023), featured actor Dev as the titular revolutionary Jatindranath Mukherjee.
Despite his illness, Roy remained dedicated to his craft, completing the filming of ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ while undergoing treatment. His commitment to cinema and storytelling has left an indelible mark on the industry.
As per reports, Roy’s body will be taken to his residence in Haridevpur, followed by a memorial at Technicians’ Studio, allowing fans and colleagues to pay their respects.
