Saif Ali Khan’s Rs. 15,000 Crore Bhopal Properties Face Government Seizure Under Enemy Property Act

Legal Uncertainty Surrounds Pataudi Family's Ancestral Assets

Breaking News

The Pataudi family’s ancestral properties in Bhopal, valued at approximately ₹15,000 crore, are at risk of being seized by the government under the Enemy Property Act, 1968. This development follows a recent ruling by the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which lifted a 2015 stay on these assets, potentially allowing their acquisition by the central government.

The properties in question include notable landmarks such as the Flag Staff House, Noor-Us-Sabah Palace, Dar-Us-Salam, Bungalow of Habibi, Ahmedabad Palace, and the Kohefiza Property. The legal contention arises from the migration of Nawab Muhammad Hamidullah Khan’s eldest daughter, Abida Sultan Begum, to Pakistan post-Partition. The Custodian of Enemy Property for India classified these assets as “enemy property” in 2015, based on her migration.

In response, Sharmila Tagore, Saif Ali Khan’s mother, challenged this designation in the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The court, in its December 13, 2024, order, directed the petitioners to file a representation with the appellate authority within 30 days, ensuring that the appeal would be considered on its merits without being dismissed on grounds of delay.

As of now, it remains unclear whether the Pataudi family has submitted the appeal. Legal experts suggest that even if the stipulated period has lapsed, the family can request an extension, citing valid reasons. The outcome of this case holds significant implications not only for the Pataudi family’s heritage but also for numerous occupants residing on these properties, whose futures remain uncertain amid the ongoing legal proceedings.
