Study Uncovers Unexpected Side Effect of Intermittent Fasting on Hair Growth

While this study highlights the importance of understanding the full range of intermittent fasting's effects

Intermittent fasting has gained widespread popularity as a weight loss strategy, with many incorporating it into their daily routine alongside diet and exercise. While it has shown positive effects on weight management, recent research published in the journal Cell reveals a surprising downside: intermittent fasting may slow down hair regeneration.

The study, conducted by researchers at Westlake University in China, specifically explored how intermittent fasting impacts hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) in mice. These stem cells play a crucial role in hair growth, relying on glucose for energy. However, when fasting periods restrict food intake, the body shifts to burning fat for energy, releasing fatty acids into the bloodstream instead of glucose. HFSCs, unfortunately, cannot efficiently process fatty acids, leading to oxidative stress. This stress can inhibit the hair regeneration process, slowing down hair growth significantly.

In the study, the fasting mice took as long as 96 days to partially regrow their hair, compared to just 30 days for non-fasted mice. Although these findings were based on mice, researchers caution that the effect may still be relevant for humans, though the severity might be less pronounced.

To mitigate this potential side effect, the researchers found that antioxidants can help alleviate oxidative stress. Topical Vitamin E and genetic enhancements that boost antioxidant levels showed promising results in promoting hair growth. This suggests that balancing intermittent fasting with proper nutrient intake, particularly antioxidants, may reduce any negative impact on hair health.

While this study highlights the importance of understanding the full range of intermittent fasting’s effects, the researchers also emphasized that individual responses vary. Factors such as genetics, diet, and overall lifestyle can influence how fasting affects a person’s health, including hair growth.

It’s essential to approach intermittent fasting with a comprehensive plan that includes proper nutrient management. If you’re considering fasting for weight loss or any other health goal, it’s always advisable to consult a healthcare professional to ensure it aligns with your individual needs.
