An undertrial prisoner at Thane Central Jail in Maharashtra was caught with a mobile phone hidden inside his footwear during a routine barrack inspection, authorities revealed on Thursday.
The incident occurred on December 30, 2024, when a jail sepoy conducted an inspection of Barrack No. 3 in the new prison section, which houses around 200 inmates. During the inspection, the sepoy found one of the prisoner Hemant Parasmal Sethia’s sandals lying on the floor, while the other was missing. After further searching, the missing sandal was located a short distance away, but it felt unusually heavy.
Upon closer examination, the sepoy discovered a broken mobile phone concealed inside the sandal. The phone had distinct markings linking it to Sethia.
A case has been filed against Sethia under relevant legal provisions, and an investigation is underway to determine how he managed to smuggle the phone into the prison. Sethia has been incarcerated since September 30, 2023, following his arrest in a criminal case registered with the Kashimira police.
