Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath recently proclaimed that “Sanatan Dharma” is the “national religion” of India, emphasizing its inclusive nature and universal appeal. Speaking during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Adityanath clarified that the event, which is drawing millions of devotees, transcends caste, religion, and social barriers. He affirmed that while the rituals of worship may vary, the essence of religion in India is rooted in Sanatan Dharma, which represents humanity’s spiritual foundation.
Adityanath’s statement came in an exclusive interview with NDTV, where he described the Kumbh Mela as a powerful symbol of unity and a representation of Sanatan Dharma’s universal values. He further highlighted the peaceful and welcoming atmosphere at the sacred site, where devotees from all walks of life come together for a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati river.
The ongoing Maha Kumbh has seen an overwhelming turnout, with over 11 crore devotees participating in the first 14 days alone. According to the chief minister, around six crore people have already taken a dip at the Sangam, marking the event as one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world. This massive turnout speaks to the significance of the Kumbh Mela as not just a religious festival, but as a powerful force of spiritual unity and national pride.
Adityanath invited those who criticize Sanatan Dharma to witness the Kumbh Mela firsthand, asserting that the event’s non-discriminatory nature proves that the essence of Sanatan Dharma lies in its ability to unite people, regardless of their background. “Those who have criticized Sanatan Dharma should come and see for themselves,” he said. “Do not be blind to the reality, experience it yourself.”
Various political leaders, including Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, have underscored the Kumbh Mela’s spiritual and cultural importance by participating in the event. Yadav, who visited Prayagraj to take a holy dip, shared that his visit was a moment of personal significance. “People come here with their faith,” he remarked after taking the holy dip. “There is no place for divisive or negative politics. Every visit to this sacred place should be a celebration of unity and devotion.”
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a festival rooted in the principles of Sanatan Dharma, holds that a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam offers spiritual cleansing, absolution of sins, and the granting of moksha (liberation). This year’s event has drawn millions of devotees, and experts predict that over 45 crore visitors will attend, making it one of the most significant spiritual events in India’s history.
As the Kumbh Mela continues to unfold, it stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of Sanatan Dharma, fostering a message of unity, devotion, and inclusivity for all of humanity.
