CBI Compromised in Kolkata — A year after their daughter, a promising postgraduate medical student from Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the college hostel, her parents now say that even India’s top investigative agency—the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)—has failed them.
Having traveled to Delhi seeking justice, the parents returned to Kolkata disheartened, alleging that the CBI is “compromised” and merely repeating what Kolkata Police earlier claimed, without pushing the investigation forward or providing scientific clarity.
“We asked for forensic clarity, we were shown bureaucratic silence,” the father said after meeting top CBI officials, including the director.
The Incident That Shocked Bengal
The young doctor was found dead on August 9, 2024, in her hostel room. Allegations of rape, torture, and murder were raised by the family, while the initial police probe suggested suicide. However, images of injuries, and gaps in procedural handling, prompted widespread protests, especially from the medical fraternity.
Due to rising public outrage, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI, citing mishandling by local authorities and the need for an impartial probe. But now, even after a year under central supervision, the family claims no meaningful progress has been made.
Delhi Visit: Disappointment in the Capital
The family flew to Delhi hoping to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and CBI Director Praveen Sood. While they managed to meet CBI officials—including the director and joint director—they were denied an audience with the Home Minister.
“We met the director, IG, joint director—no answers, just smiles. They said they will meet us again, but didn’t offer any timeline or update on the reports,” said the father.
The mother, equally devastated, said, “If the CBI is compromised, where do we go? Who do we turn to? We feel like victims not only of a crime, but of the system.”
CBI Compromised in Kolkata: Allegations of Political Influence
The family has also accused the CBI of bowing to political pressure. Speaking outside the CBI office in Delhi, the father alleged, “They are compromised. Either they have been politically pressurized or they have received money to stay silent.”
“Our daughter was not just raped and murdered—she’s being forgotten. And those who should fight for her are helping bury the truth.”
Forensic Reports: Still Under Wraps
The parents asked CBI officials for access to crucial forensic details, particularly the FLCL (Forensic Laboratory Chemical Lab) and MIB (Medical Injury Board) reports, which they believe would clarify how their daughter died.
Instead, they were told those documents were “still under review,” with no explanation provided.
No Closure, One Year Later
As the first anniversary of their daughter’s death approaches on August 9, the family is preparing to hold a protest march toward Nabanna, the West Bengal state secretariat. This march will be supported by rights groups, doctors, students, and general citizens frustrated with the lack of justice.
They have also contacted renowned Supreme Court advocate Karuna Nundy to explore legal options at the national level.
Backdrop: The Challenge of Central Probes in West Bengal
Since 2018, the West Bengal government has revoked general consent for CBI operations, meaning the central agency cannot freely operate in the state without explicit permission. Although courts can override this, such political complexities often delay progress.
This layer of administrative control, combined with political rivalry between state and Centre, has led to fears that justice in sensitive cases often gets mired in bureaucratic red tape and political calculations.
A Symbolic Case for Institutional Integrity
The RG Kar case has become a symbol of public disillusionment with both state and central systems of justice. What began as a demand for a fair probe has turned into a larger commentary on the state of women’s safety, medical campus culture, and the credibility of investigative agencies.
The family’s quiet resilience has inspired thousands, but their patience is waning.
“We don’t want compensation. We want the truth. We want accountability,” said the mother.
