NEPAL: On January 2, 2025, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck northern Nepal, with its epicenter in Sindhupalchowk district, approximately 70 km north of Kathmandu. The tremor occurred today afternoon at 1:02 PM local time and was felt in Kathmandu and surrounding districts.
According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center (NEMRC), this seismic event is considered an aftershock of the 2015 Gorkha earthquake. Residents in the Kathmandu Valley experienced mild shaking; however, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
This incident marks the ninth tremor above magnitude 3 recorded in Nepal within the past 20 days, with eight occurring in Western Nepal. Experts have noted an increasing risk of significant earthquakes in the region.
