Cabinet Approves Construction of 4-Lane Greenfield Mokama-Munger Section of Buxar-Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor in Bihar

Breaking News

Bihar: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the construction of a 4-lane greenfield access-controlled Mokama-Munger section of the Buxar-Bhagalpur High-Speed Corridor in Bihar on 10th September 2025. The project, spanning 82.4 km, will be executed on a Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) basis with a total estimated outlay of ₹4,447.38 crore.

Connectivity and Regional Importance

The corridor will pass through key cities including Mokama, Barahiya, Lakhisarai, Jamalpur, and Munger, connecting to Bhagalpur. This section aims to boost connectivity in eastern Bihar, providing safer, faster, and uninterrupted travel for both passenger and freight vehicles. With design speeds of 100 km/h and average vehicular speeds of 80 km/h, the travel time between Mokama and Munger will reduce to approximately 1.5 hours.

Emerging Industrial Belt

The Munger-Jamalpur-Bhagalpur area is a budding industrial hub featuring an existing ordnance factory and a proposed additional unit under the Ordnance Factory Corridor initiative by the Ministry of Defence. Jamalpur is known for its locomotive workshop, Munger houses ITC’s food processing unit, and Bhagalpur is recognized for its textile production, particularly Bhagalpuri silk, alongside logistics and warehousing. Barahiya is witnessing growth in agro-processing and food packaging industries. The corridor is poised to accelerate freight movement, industrial activity, and logistics efficiency in the region.

Employment Generation and Economic Impact

The project is expected to create approximately 14.83 lakh man-days of direct employment and 18.46 lakh man-days of indirect employment. Additionally, the corridor is anticipated to induce further economic activities, generating more employment opportunities in its vicinity.

Complementary Railway Development: Mokama-Munger

Separately, the Cabinet also approved the doubling of the Bhagalpur-Dumka-Rampurhat railway line, spanning 177 km across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, estimated at a cost of ₹3,169 crore. This initiative will enhance railway capacity and reduce congestion on a vital freight corridor.

Conclusion

The construction of the Mokama-Munger section marks a strategic infrastructural investment that will galvanize Bihar’s connectivity and economic growth. The integration of road and rail projects aligns with the vision of building a more self-reliant, industrially vibrant eastern India under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
