Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Ludhiana West, Gurpreet Gogi, tragically passed away late Friday night after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja, Gogi reportedly shot himself accidentally while in his room, as claimed by his family members.
Incident Details
The incident occurred around midnight when family members heard a gunshot and rushed to Gogi’s room. They found him lying in a pool of blood with a head injury. He was immediately taken to Dayanand Medical College (DMC) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The exact cause of the incident will be confirmed after the post-mortem report, said DCP Teja.
Political Career and Contributions
Gurpreet Gogi joined the AAP in 2022 and won the Punjab Vidhan Sabha seat from Ludhiana West by defeating two-time MLA and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu. This was Gogi’s first term as an MLA.
Before his legislative career, Gogi served three consecutive terms as a municipal councillor for Ludhiana West’s Ward No. 76 from 2007 to 2022. He also held the position of District Congress Committee (Urban) president from 2014 to 2019. Under the Congress government, he chaired the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) from 2019 to 2022.
In August 2024, Gogi made headlines after ordering the removal of the foundation stone for a ₹650 crore Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project, which he had initially laid in 2022. He cited frustration with the poor progress of the departments involved as the reason behind the decision.
