Wildfires raging in California have wreaked unprecedented devastation, particularly in the Los Angeles area. The fires, which ignited earlier this week, have destroyed approximately 12,000 structures, including homes, businesses, and vehicles, and claimed at least 11 lives. Fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, the fires spread rapidly across the region, prompting the evacuation of more than 150,000 people by Friday.
The financial impact is staggering, with early estimates from weather firm AccuWeather projecting the damage could reach between $135 billion to $150 billion, potentially making this disaster the most expensive wildfire event in U.S. history. However, government officials have yet to release an official damage assessment.
Significant destruction has been reported in areas like Pacific Palisades, where over 5,300 structures have been damaged or destroyed, including celebrity homes of Jamie Lee Curtis and Billy Crystal. In Pasadena, the fire burned more than 7,000 structures, including residential, commercial buildings, and vehicles.
As of Friday, air quality warnings have been issued for 17 million residents in Southern California, as thick smoke and ash continue to blanket the region. Additionally, over 175,000 residents are without power, with Los Angeles County being the hardest hit.
Authorities have urged the public to be cautious when offering help, as fraud attempts have surfaced in the wake of the disaster. Local officials recommend donating through verified platforms, such as LAWorks.com/2025fires, to ensure assistance reaches those in need.
