The Maha Kumbh Mela, revered as the world’s largest religious gathering, commenced today in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. This 45-day event, spanning from January 13 to February 26, 2025, is anticipated to draw over 400 million devotees to the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.

The festival began with the ‘Shahi Snan’ (royal bath) on Paush Purnima, with approximately 60 lakh (6 million) devotees taking the holy dip in the early hours, braving the cold temperatures.
To accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims, authorities have established a vast temporary city over 4,000 hectares, equipped with extensive infrastructure, including 150,000 tents, 150,000 portable toilets, and enhanced transportation services. Security measures are robust, with 40,000 police officers deployed and AI-powered surveillance systems in place to ensure the safety of attendees.
The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated a budget of approximately ₹7,000 crore for the event, emphasizing sanitation, healthcare, and crowd management. Notably, the Maha Kumbh 2025 is projected to generate up to ₹2 lakh crore in economic growth for the state, highlighting its significance beyond spiritual dimensions.
The festival holds profound religious importance, with devotees believing that bathing at the Sangam during this period absolves sins and facilitates liberation from the cycle of rebirth. The event also showcases India’s rich cultural heritage, with various religious sects, including the Naga sadhus, participating in traditional rituals and processions.
