Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant political development, PV Anvar, the legislator representing Nilambur constituency in Kerala, tendered his resignation on January 13, 2025, shortly after joining the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). Anvar, who previously served as an independent MLA with Left Democratic Front (LDF) backing, submitted his resignation to Speaker AN Shamseer at the Legislative Assembly complex.
Anvar’s decision to resign is seen as a strategic move to preempt disqualification under the anti-defection law, which prohibits elected members from switching parties without relinquishing their legislative positions. By resigning, Anvar ensures compliance with legal protocols, thereby maintaining the integrity of his political transition.
Upon his induction into the TMC, Anvar was appointed as the party’s state coordinator, signaling the West Bengal-based party’s intent to expand its influence in Kerala’s political landscape. Anvar’s alignment with the TMC comes after a period of estrangement from the LDF, following his public criticism of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government, particularly concerning the operations of the Chief Minister’s office and political secretary.
In a notable declaration, Anvar announced that he would not contest the forthcoming by-election in Nilambur. Instead, he has pledged support to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), advocating for a Congress candidate from the Christian community to represent the constituency. This endorsement underscores Anvar’s commitment to fostering communal representation and reflects his strategic political realignment.
Anvar’s political journey has been marked by his tenure as a two-time MLA from Nilambur, securing victories in both the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections with LDF support. His recent shift to the TMC and subsequent resignation indicate a dynamic shift in Kerala’s political arena, with potential implications for upcoming electoral contests and party alliances.
