Rohit Sharma to Retire After Champions Trophy, Unlikely to Play in England for Test Series

While Rohit is expected to lead India during the 2025 Champions Trophy, this may mark the conclusion of his international cricket career.

India’s cricket captain, Rohit Sharma, who has faced criticism for his recent performances, is set to play his final international cricket tournament during the 2025 Champions Trophy. Despite facing a dip in form, including a meager 164 runs across the last three series, his future beyond the Champions Trophy remains uncertain.

Rohit’s performances, particularly in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, have sparked debates regarding his position in the team. His struggles have been evident, with a solitary fifty and an underwhelming average of just 6.2 on the Australian tour. This poor run of form, coupled with India’s inability to secure a spot in the World Test Championship, has led to speculation about his retirement.

Earlier, during the Sydney Test, Rohit dismissed retirement rumors by saying, “I’m not going anywhere,” putting an end to immediate concerns. However, discussions about his future continued within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), with selectors reportedly worried about his ongoing performance.

Reports indicate that the 37-year-old is unlikely to travel to England for India’s upcoming Test series. The team is scheduled to play five Tests in England following the Champions Trophy, but the probability of Rohit being part of that tour appears low. Cricket pundits, including former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist, have speculated that Rohit may choose to step away from Test cricket, making the Champions Trophy his swan song.
