In a recent statement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused veteran politician Sharad Pawar of initiating a “politics of betrayal and treachery” in Maharashtra in 1978, asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the 2024 assembly elections ended this era.
Addressing a state BJP convention in Shirdi, Shah remarked, “Sharad Pawar started politics of ‘daga-phatka’ (betrayal and treachery) in Maharashtra in 1978, which was rejected by people in 2024 (elections).”
In response, Sharad Pawar, founder of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), dismissed Shah’s allegations. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the decorum associated with the position of Union Home Minister and expressed concern over the current lack of communication among political leaders.
Pawar stated, “When I was the chief minister, there were people like Uttamrao Patil from Jan Sangh in my ministry.” He further added, “The decorum of the post of home minister should be maintained.”
The political landscape in Maharashtra has been tumultuous, with significant shifts in alliances and power structures. In the 2024 assembly elections, the BJP, in coalition with factions of the NCP and Shiv Sena, secured a substantial victory, winning 230 out of 288 seats. The BJP led the coalition with 132 seats, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was reduced to 46 seats, with NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) securing 10 and 20 seats, respectively.
Shah also criticized Uddhav Thackeray, leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), accusing him of engaging in dynastic politics and betrayal. He claimed that the electorate had shown both Pawar and Thackeray “their place” by rejecting their politics in the recent elections.
