A stolen motorcycle was recovered in Japan thanks to vigilant social media users, who identified the thief after he posted pictures of the bike online. The thief, a 39-year-old man from Hamamatsu city, had disguised himself as a female cosplayer, according to reports from the South China Morning Post.

The rare Suzuki TL1000R, valued at approximately 1.1 million yen (Rs.5.81 lakh), was reported stolen from a residential parking area in Shinshiro city, Aichi prefecture, on December 30. The bike’s owner, known on X (formerly Twitter) as @nyankoya85, and his wife, @chanmn__12, appealed for help by sharing the bike’s specifications and registration details online.

The post gained widespread attention, amassing over 14 million views. Social media users quickly linked the theft to a cosplayer, @SakuraVictoria_, who had shared photos of the motorcycle on December 31, claiming it was a long-desired purchase. Sharp-eyed users noticed unique tire patterns in the photos, confirming the bike’s identity.

Police were alerted, and the suspect confessed to the theft on January 1, 2025. He admitted to stealing the bike from a residential parking area and apologized to the owner. However, the victim refused to forgive him, citing damage to the steering lock during the theft.

The cosplayer’s social media accounts have since been locked, and all posts have been hidden. Online reactions ranged from amusement to relief, with many calling the thief’s actions reckless. “It’s a lucky sign that the bike was recovered on the first day of the year,” a commenter wrote.
