NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has once again criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological partner, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing them of undermining India’s democratic institutions. His remarks emphasize concerns about the state of democracy and institutional independence in the country.
Addressing a recent gathering, Gandhi stated, “We are now fighting the Indian state.” He alleged that the BJP-RSS is systematically taking control of key institutions, including the judiciary, media, and civil services, which he believes is harmful to the nation’s democratic ethos.
Gandhi has frequently highlighted the centralization of power and shrinking space for dissent under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He contends that institutional checks and balances have been eroded, posing significant risks to India’s democratic framework.
The BJP, however, has dismissed these claims, stating that Gandhi’s accusations lack evidence and are politically motivated. According to BJP representatives, the Modi government has instead worked to enhance institutional integrity and efficiency.
