The Congress party officially inaugurated its new headquarters, ‘Indira Gandhi Bhawan,’ at 9A Kotla Road in New Delhi on Wednesday, marking the end of an era at the iconic 24, Akbar Road office, which served as its base for 47 years.
The inauguration ceremony was led by Congress Parliamentary Party Chief Sonia Gandhi, who cut the ceremonial ribbon alongside Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, and other senior leaders were also present for the historic event. The ceremony included the lighting of a lamp by Sonia Gandhi, Kharge, and Rahul Gandhi, symbolizing a new beginning for the party.
A New Chapter in Congress History
The transition to the new headquarters is seen as a significant moment for the party. Congress leader Sachin Pilot described it as “a new beginning” that could pave the way for positive changes in both the party and the nation.
The construction of the state-of-the-art building began during Sonia Gandhi’s presidency and was executed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T). At the event, party general secretary KC Venugopal thanked Sonia Gandhi, Kharge, and other leaders for their contributions, while also acknowledging L&T’s efforts in bringing the project to fruition.
Rahul Gandhi’s Address and Attack on RSS Chief
Speaking at the event, Rahul Gandhi highlighted the symbolic importance of the new headquarters, calling it “born out of the soil of the country.” He also took the opportunity to criticize Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s controversial remarks about India’s independence and the Constitution.
“Mohan Bhagwat’s statement that the Constitution is not a symbol of freedom and that India didn’t gain independence in 1947 is an insult to every Indian. This is treason, and such comments would result in legal action in any other country,” Rahul Gandhi said.
The move to ‘Indira Gandhi Bhawan’ comes as the Congress party aims to revitalize itself after being out of power at the national level since 2014. Leaders hope this shift symbolizes a resurgence in the party’s fortunes.
