AAP’s Sanjay Singh Accuses Delhi Election Official of Reposting BJP Content on Social Media; DEO Responds

The official response concluded with a reaffirmation of the DEO’s commitment to upholding the Election Commission’s guidelines

Breaking News

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh has raised serious allegations against the district election officer (DEO) of New Delhi, accusing the official of secretly reposting content from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The accusations come just weeks ahead of the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled for February 5.

Singh, a prominent leader of AAP, shared a screenshot of a post on the DEO’s official X account, which showed a BJP tweet featuring photographs of party leaders Virendra Sachdeva, Bansuri Swaraj, and Om Pathak meeting with the Election Commission. The AAP leader expressed his concern, stating, “For the first time in the history of India, the Election Officer of New Delhi started retweeting BJP’s tweets secretly.” Singh further alleged, “The District Election Officer has now decided to join BJP and campaign openly. Tomorrow at 11 am, the District Election Officer will formally join BJP at the BJP office.”

In his tweet, Singh implied that the DEO’s actions were biased and in favor of the BJP, raising questions about the neutrality of election officials during the crucial period leading up to the elections.

In response to the allegations, the New Delhi district election officer’s X account posted a clarification. The response stated that a Nodal Officer in the Social Media Cell manages the DEO’s social media handle, and their responsibilities include addressing tweets and countering misinformation. The DEO’s office explained that the social media team inadvertently reposted the BJP content during routine engagement with social media posts. Once the team noticed the issue, they promptly undid the repost.

The DEO’s office also announced that it had replaced the Nodal Officer in charge of social media content to ensure accountability and prevent any similar incidents in the future. The DEO instructed the social media team to be more cautious in its operations to maintain the integrity and impartiality of the DEO’s communications.

The official response concluded with a reaffirmation of the DEO’s commitment to upholding the Election Commission’s guidelines and ensuring impartiality in all election-related matters.

The authorities have scheduled the upcoming elections to the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly for February 5, and they will declare the results on February 8. As the election date nears, political parties are closely monitoring developments and allegations surrounding the conduct of election officials, as any perception of bias could potentially influence voter confidence.
