Kangana Ranaut recently took to Instagram to express her feelings about the ongoing protests preventing her film Emergency from releasing in Punjab. The film, which explores the controversial Emergency period of 1975–1977 during Indira Gandhi’s rule, has sparked protests in India and abroad. Kangana addressed the situation in a heartfelt video where she thanked fans for their support while discussing the challenges the film faced.
Kangana’s Reaction to ‘Emergency’ Not Being Released in Punjab
In her video, Kangana shared her gratitude for the love the film has received but also expressed her sadness over the film’s inability to release in Punjab. “It was always said that my films perform the best in Punjab. And today, my film isn’t even being allowed to release there,” Kangana said. She noted that despite the success of her previous films in the state, Emergency faced resistance due to protests.
The movie was not screened in cinemas across Punjab on its release date, following protests led by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and several Sikh organizations. These groups called for a ban on the film, which led to widespread demonstrations outside cinemas and malls.
Protests in Canada and the UK
Kangana also spoke about similar protests abroad, particularly in Canada and the UK. “Some attacks are also happening in Canada and Britain,” she said. “A few people, some chosen ones, have started this fire. You and I are both burning in that fire.” Her comments reflected the growing tension around the film, with some groups opposing its depiction of political history and its portrayal of Indira Gandhi during the Emergency.
In London, pro-Khalistan extremists disrupted a screening of Emergency in Harrow, trying to halt its screening. These actions highlight the international controversy surrounding the film.
Kangana’s Message to Fans
Despite the protests, Kangana urged viewers to watch Emergency and form their own opinions. “My principles and my attachment to my country are proven through this film,” she said. “You watch the film and decide if it breaks us or brings us together.” She concluded the video by thanking her fans for their unwavering support and encouraging them to watch the film, which is currently showing in cinemas.
About Emergency
Released on January 17, Emergency delves into one of the most controversial chapters of Indian political history—the 21 months during which Indira Gandhi declared a national emergency. The film explores the political and societal impacts of the Emergency, with Kangana playing the role of Indira Gandhi. Emergency also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik.
Despite the ongoing protests, Kangana’s Emergency has garnered attention for its bold portrayal of a transformative and contentious period in India’s history. The protests against the film, however, continue to overshadow its success in cinemas.
As Kangana continues to stand by her work, the controversies surrounding the film reflect the deep divisions within the country over how its history should be remembered and depicted.
