Trump’s First Executive Action: Scraps CBP One App to End Migrant Entry Scheme

Trump’s administration is likely to face significant scrutiny as he pushes for swift changes.

Breaking News

In a decisive first move as the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump immediately discontinued the CBP One app, a tool that had been instrumental in facilitating legal entry for migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. The app, which operated as an online lottery system, allowed 1,450 people daily to schedule appointments for entry into the United States through various southwest border ports. By ending the program, Trump fulfilled a key campaign promise, aligning with his stance on tightening border security and limiting immigration.

Shortly after Trump’s inauguration, authorities took the CBP One app offline, which had granted nearly 1 million migrants entry and work eligibility. A notice posted on the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) website confirmed the cancellation of the app and all existing appointments. Trump’s supporters, who viewed the app as a magnet for illegal immigration and a policy misstep under the previous administration, are expected to strongly support the decision to scrap the tool.

Trump’s Swearing-In and Immediate Actions

Trump took the oath of office during a ceremony held in the Capitol Rotunda, the first indoor swearing-in in 40 years, due to inclement weather. The inauguration marked a major political comeback for Trump, who had previously faced impeachment, criminal charges, and even two assassination attempts. In his inaugural address, he vowed to restore “common sense” to Washington, reaffirming his commitment to reclaiming American sovereignty and security.

Trump wasted no time in advancing his agenda, already signing a series of executive orders aimed at enhancing border security, boosting fossil fuel production, and dismantling diversity and inclusion programs within federal agencies. His actions underscore his promise to “completely and totally reverse” what he described as a “horrible betrayal” of the American people.

“We are at the start of a new thrilling era of national success,” he proclaimed. “From this moment on, America’s decline is over.”

While the early executive orders reflect Trump’s readiness to act on his promises, many of his more complex objectives, such as reducing inflation and imposing tariffs on foreign goods, could face challenges and require patience from his supporters.

A Day of Political Contrasts and Symbolism

In a break from the norm, frigid temperatures marked Trump’s inauguration, leading organizers to shift the event from the traditional outdoor parade to a venue at a downtown arena. The inauguration saw prominent tech moguls, including Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk, in attendance, with Musk expected to spearhead efforts to cut federal spending and reduce government jobs.

After Trump’s swearing-in, he and outgoing President Joe Biden had a more cordial interaction. In contrast to four years ago when Trump refused to attend Biden’s inauguration, the two men shared a limo ride to the Capitol. The occasion also coincided with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Trump honored the civil rights leader, pledging to continue striving to make King’s dream a reality.

Trump’s Political Resolve and Future Plans

Despite his tumultuous first term and the challenges posed by his legal issues and past controversies, Trump remains a powerful figure within the Republican Party. His supporters, frustrated by inflation and immigration issues, rallied behind him for a return to power. As President, he has vowed to reassert American values, reduce immigration, and undo policies from the previous administration.

Trump’s administration is likely to face significant scrutiny as he pushes for swift changes. However, his focus on border control, trade policies, and national security promises to reshape the U.S. government’s priorities for years to come.
