Activist Anjali Damania has called for the Santosh Deshmukh murder trial to be conducted in Mumbai instead of Beed, citing concerns about police collusion and security in the region. Damania met Maharashtra DGP Rashmi Shukla on Wednesday, alleging an atmosphere of “terror” in Beed and raising several irregularities surrounding the case.
Key Demands by Anjali Damania
- Shift the Trial Venue to Mumbai
Damania requested that the trial be moved to Mumbai to ensure impartial proceedings. - Transfer Accused to Arthur Road Jail
She demanded that Vishnu Chate, one of the key accused, and others be moved to Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. Chate was allegedly transferred to Latur jail “of his choice” due to his connections with police officials. - Investigation into Extortion Links
Damania highlighted links between the murder and an extortion attempt targeting a windmill company. She pointed out that Walmik Karad, an aide of Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde, is an accused in the extortion case. - Anti-Corruption Bureau Scrutiny
The activist claimed that a sugar mill linked to Munde received a government loan of ₹62 crore and urged the DGP to initiate a probe through the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
Background of the Case
Santosh Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was abducted, tortured, and murdered on December 9, 2024, after resisting an extortion attempt targeting an energy company. Following investigations, the police arrested seven individuals, including Vishnu Chate. Another accused remains at large.
Allegations Against Minister Dhananjay Munde
Damania submitted documents claiming financial irregularities involving Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde and his wife. She alleged that their companies had ties to Karad, an accused in the extortion case. Additionally, she asserted that Munde might lose his MLA position due to a potential office of profit violation.
Current Status
- Walmik Karad has been remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
- The activist demanded immediate action to ensure transparency and justice in the case.
Anjali Damania’s allegations and demands underscore the need for thorough investigations and impartial trials, especially in cases involving high-profile figures and sensitive allegations. The shift of the trial venue to Mumbai could help mitigate concerns of undue influence and ensure a fair judicial process.
