Manoj Tiwary, the former Indian cricketer, has shared a heartfelt tribute to Virender Sehwag for a selfless gesture that changed the course of his career. Tiwary, who only managed 12 ODIs and three T20Is in a seven-year international career, recalled how Sehwag dropped himself from the Playing XI to allow Tiwary to play, despite his own career-best double century against the West Indies in 2011.
A Lifeline from Sehwag
Tiwary had faced a string of low scores in his initial matches for India, which made his future with the team uncertain. However, Sehwag saw Tiwary’s potential and, instead of holding onto his spot, made a bold decision to step aside. Tiwary, who had been shuffled around the batting order and not given consistent chances, was finally given an opportunity to bat at his preferred No. 4 position.
Tiwary recalled Sehwag’s words on The Lallantop: “He [Sehwag] is my idol. I will be indebted to him till my last breath. If he didn’t drop himself, my life would have been different. He saw I wasn’t getting chances and took the decision to make me play.”
The Historic Century
Tiwary’s opportunity came in a match after India had been reduced to 1/2, with Tiwary coming in early to bat. Alongside Gautam Gambhir, Tiwary built an 83-run partnership before Gambhir was dismissed. Tiwary then formed a crucial 117-run stand with Virat Kohli for the fourth wicket. Tiwary’s century, which came under immense pressure, was a turning point in his career. Despite cramping up, Tiwary’s resilience shone through, and he was eventually retired hurt.
Looking back on that century, Tiwary reflected, “When I scored the century and won the Player of the Match award, I felt that I belonged in international cricket.” Sehwag’s happiness for his teammate’s success was evident, and Tiwary continues to cherish this moment.
Sehwag’s Selflessness
Sehwag’s gesture exemplified true sportsmanship and a desire to see his teammates succeed, even if it meant sacrificing his own place in the team. Tiwary credits Sehwag for this act, stating that without it, his career could have taken a different trajectory.
Tiwary’s emotional tribute to Sehwag underlines the importance of mentorship and support within a team, especially when it comes to nurturing young talent.
