Supreme Court Demands Forensic Analysis of Alleged Audio Involving Manipur Chief Minister

The Supreme Court of India has ordered a forensic examination of audio recordings allegedly featuring Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh inciting ethnic violence, with a report due by March 24, 2025.

Breaking News

The Supreme Court of India has directed the submission of a forensic report concerning audio recordings that purportedly feature Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh instigating ethnic violence in the state. The bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, has mandated that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) examine these tapes and present their findings in a sealed cover by March 24, 2025.

Background of the Allegations

The Kuki Organization for Human Rights Trust filed a writ petition alleging that Chief Minister Biren Singh was recorded during a private meeting, where he purportedly incited ethnic tensions. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the petitioner, asserted that “Truth Labs,” a forensic laboratory, had verified the voice in the recordings as that of Singh. He emphasized the urgency of an independent investigation into the matter.

Government’s Response

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, contended that the petitioner should have initially approached the High Court. He informed the Supreme Court that an FIR had been registered, and an investigation was underway, with the tapes currently undergoing forensic examination. Mehta also accused the petitioner of harboring a separatist mindset.

Court’s Directive

Chief Justice Khanna, without delving into the contents or authenticity of the recordings, inquired about the status of the State Forensic Laboratory’s report. The bench then ordered the CFSL to expedite its analysis and submit the findings in a sealed cover by the specified date. The court also noted that the preliminary objections raised by the Solicitor General would remain open for further consideration.

Implications of the Case

This development underscores the judiciary’s commitment to addressing serious allegations against public officials. The outcome of the forensic analysis could have significant political and social ramifications, especially given the sensitive nature of ethnic relations in Manipur. The Supreme Court’s insistence on a thorough and impartial investigation reflects its dedication to upholding justice and maintaining public trust.
