In a significant political shift, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Parvesh Verma has unseated Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi assembly constituency during the 2025 elections. Verma secured victory by a margin of 4,089 votes, marking a pivotal moment in Delhi’s political landscape.
Following his electoral success, Verma visited his ancestral village, Gherva in Mundka, to pay homage to his late father, former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma. At the Dr. Sahib Singh Verma Samadhi Sthal, he expressed his commitment to completing his father’s unfinished projects. Addressing supporters, Verma stated, “My father’s life is an inspiration for me. His unfinished works are resolves of mine.”
Parvesh Verma’s political journey is deeply rooted in his family’s legacy. Born on November 7, 1977, he is the son of Sahib Singh Verma, who served as Delhi’s Chief Minister from 1996 to 1998. Parvesh pursued his education at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, and Kirori Mal College, later earning an MBA from the Fore School of Management. His political career includes serving as a Member of Parliament for West Delhi and representing the Mehrauli constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
The 2025 election witnessed a significant shift in Delhi’s political dynamics. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 assembly seats, ending a 27-year hiatus in the capital’s governance. This victory is attributed to various factors, including public dissatisfaction with the previous administration and the BJP’s focused campaign strategies.
Verma’s campaign emphasized addressing longstanding issues in the New Delhi constituency. He criticized Kejriwal for neglecting development in the area, stating that the AAP leader “did not provide even a single house in 11 years and has only ‘cheated’ the people of Delhi after taking their votes.”
In his post-election address, Verma highlighted the neglect of outer Delhi areas, known as ‘Delhi Dehaat,’ by previous governments. He assured residents that the new administration would prioritize development in regions like Narela, Bawana, and Najafgarh. He remarked, “The entire Delhi Dehaat is in a bad state as it was ignored by the parties that were in power; now the people here know that work will be done.”
A key focus of Verma’s agenda is the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River. Drawing inspiration from successful projects like the Sabarmati riverfront in Gujarat, he emphasized the importance of cleaning and developing the Yamuna. “Our government made Sabarmati riverfront in Gujarat, and the way PM Modi spoke yesterday, Yamuna will be our priority,” Verma stated.
Expressing gratitude, Verma credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the BJP’s electoral success in Delhi. He noted, “The people of Delhi have shown trust in PM Modi and the credit for this victory goes to him.”
As Parvesh Verma prepares to assume office, he faces the challenge of addressing the aspirations of Delhi’s residents. His commitment to his father’s legacy and focus on development signal a proactive approach to governance. The coming years will reveal how effectively he can translate his promises into tangible outcomes for the capital’s populace.
