Delhi Police have filed an FIR against AAP leader Amanatullah Khan, accusing him of leading an attack on a police team in Jamia Nagar, which helped a proclaimed offender escape custody. The accused, Shabaz Khan, is wanted in a case of attempted murder.
According to a senior police officer, the incident occurred when the Delhi Police Crime Branch attempted to arrest Shabaz Khan. Supporters of Amanatullah Khan confronted the police team, allowing Shabaz to flee from the scene. The police confirmed that Khan was present at the time and played a key role in the attack, which obstructed the police from carrying out their duties.
In response to the incident, the Delhi Police are now in the process of registering an FIR against Khan and his supporters for obstructing a public servant from discharging their duties.
Earlier, a Delhi Police team visited Khan’s residence, with video footage showing officers outside the house of the Okhla MLA-elect. An aide of Khan told ANI that the police did not explain the purpose of their visit and left after being allowed to inspect the premises.
Amanatullah Khan, who won the Okhla assembly seat for the third consecutive time in the recent elections, had previously been granted bail in November 2022 after being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case involving the Delhi Waqf Board.
Khan defeated BJP’s Manish Chaudhary by a margin of 23,639 votes in the February elections, securing 88,943 votes. AIMIM candidate Shifa Ur Rehman came third with 39,558 votes. Khan accused the Congress of focusing more on ensuring the defeat of AAP than achieving electoral success for itself. He claimed that the Congress’s campaign in his constituency, led by Rahul Gandhi, was aimed solely at undermining his chances of winning.
The police investigation into the alleged attack on the police team is ongoing, and authorities have emphasized their commitment to holding all those responsible accountable for obstructing law enforcement.
