SURAT/MUMBAI: A 50-year-old man accused of sexually abusing three minor girls in Virar has been arrested in Surat, Gujarat. The police, after launching a manhunt, successfully tracked him down and brought him back to Mumbai. He is set to be produced in court on Wednesday, said Lalu Toure, senior inspector at Virar Police Station.
Case Details
According to officials, the accused and the three survivors lived in the same residential complex in Virar. The incident came to light when the mother of two of the girls overheard them discussing the matter during an argument at home on February 23. Upon questioning, the girls revealed that they were being abused by their neighbor, whom they had been introduced to by a friend.
The mother immediately lodged a complaint at the police station, prompting authorities to register a case and begin their search for the accused, who had already fled by then.
How the Crime Unfolded
Investigations revealed that the accused had initially brought home a 16-year-old girl, the daughter of an acquaintance, under the pretext of providing her shelter. Over time, he allegedly started exploiting her and later introduced her to the two other victims, aged 13 and 14. He invited the sisters to his house under false pretenses and subjected them to abuse.
According to police sources, the accused had been exploiting the 16-year-old for over a year and had targeted the two younger girls for about one and a half months. He allegedly threatened them to ensure their silence.
Accused’s Background and Arrest
Further inquiries revealed that the accused had a criminal history and had previously served a jail sentence. He reportedly became acquainted with the 16-year-old girl’s father while incarcerated. After his release, he took custody of the girl and later introduced her to the other minors.
After the complaint was filed, police teams worked relentlessly to track his movements. Their efforts led them to Surat, where he was arrested and transported back to Mumbai.
The accused remains in custody as investigations continue. Authorities are also checking whether he was involved in any other offenses.
Legal Proceedings
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to sexual offenses and exploitation of minors. Officials stated that they are gathering additional evidence and will ensure strict action against the accused.
This case underscores the importance of vigilance within communities and the need for prompt action to protect vulnerable children. The police have urged parents to be more aware of their children’s surroundings and to report any suspicious activities immediately.
