IKEA, the renowned Swedish furniture retailer, is set to expand its footprint in India by launching online delivery services in Delhi-NCR and nine surrounding cities starting March 1, 2025. This strategic move aims to cater to the growing demand for home furnishing solutions in North India, allowing customers in regions such as Agra, Prayagraj, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, and Varanasi to access IKEA’s extensive range of over 7,000 products through its website and mobile app.
To ensure efficient and eco-friendly deliveries, IKEA will deploy 50 electric vehicles (EVs) in the Delhi-NCR region. This initiative aligns with the company’s global commitment to achieving 100% zero-emission deliveries by 2025. Susanne Pulverer, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA India, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “For IKEA, a sustainable value chain is an essential part of our growth journey.” This commitment is further demonstrated by IKEA’s existing operations in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Pune, where 100% of deliveries are already conducted using electric vehicles.
The decision to introduce online services ahead of physical store openings in Delhi-NCR is a strategic move to meet the immediate needs of customers in the region. This approach allows IKEA to gather valuable insights into consumer preferences, which will inform the development of future stores. Pulverer noted, “As we continue to strengthen our omni-channel growth in the country, this launch in Delhi NCR and other markets will be a strong foundation for our future growth in the region.”
In preparation for this expansion, IKEA has inaugurated a 180,000 square-foot central distribution center in Gurugram. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to support both e-commerce operations and the upcoming large-format stores planned for Gurugram and Noida. The distribution center will play a crucial role in ensuring timely and efficient deliveries, enhancing the overall customer experience.
IKEA’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its delivery fleet. The company is actively expanding EV charging infrastructure at its stores to support large delivery vehicles, employees, and customers. This initiative is part of IKEA’s broader goal to become climate-positive by 2030, aiming to halve greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
