Kerala: 47-year-old Ani Thomas Gabriel from Thumba, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was fatally shot by Jordanian security forces on February 10, 2025, while attempting to illegally cross the border into Israel. The Indian Embassy in Amman confirmed his death to the family via email on March 1.
Final Conversation with Family
Gabriel’s wife, Christeena, recounted their last conversation, stating that he called on February 9, speaking briefly and requesting her prayers. Unbeknownst to his family, Gabriel had left home on February 5, initially informing them he was visiting Velankanni, a Christian pilgrimage center in Tamil Nadu. It was only after his demise that the family learned of his actual whereabouts.
Details of the Incident
Gabriel was part of a four-member group attempting to cross from Jordan into Israel with the assistance of an agent. The group had entered Jordan on three-month visit visas. During their border crossing attempt in the Karak district, Jordanian soldiers intercepted them. As they tried to flee, the soldiers opened fire and shot Gabriel in the head. They also injured another member of the group, Edison, in the leg. After receiving treatment in a Jordanian army hospital, authorities deported him to India, and he arrived in Thiruvananthapuram earlier this week.
Family’s Plea for Repatriation
The family is now appealing to the Indian government for assistance in repatriating Gabriel’s remains. They have expressed concerns over the lack of detailed information regarding the circumstances of his death and are seeking clarity from the authorities.
Embassy’s Response
The Indian Embassy in Jordan confirmed the Indian national’s death and is coordinating with authorities to repatriate his remains.
