Mumbai: Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi’s recent remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb have ignited a political controversy in Maharashtra. Azmi claimed that during Aurangzeb’s reign, India’s borders extended to Afghanistan and Burma, contributing to 24% of the global GDP, earning the nation the moniker “golden sparrow.” He also characterized the conflict between Aurangzeb and Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj as a political battle.
These statements have sparked outrage among various political factions. Shiv Sena supporters staged protests against Azmi, and the issue disrupted proceedings in the state assembly, with ruling party members demanding Azmi’s suspension.
In response to a complaint by Lok Sabha member Naresh Mhaske, the Thane police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Azmi for allegedly attempting to hurt religious sentiments. This FIR was later transferred to Mumbai, where the Marine Drive police station registered a fresh case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Azmi has defended his remarks by referencing historical accounts, stating that Aurangzeb included Hindus in his administration and destroyed both temples and mosques. He apologized if his comments hurt sentiments but maintained that his statements were based on historical facts.
The controversy has also led to heightened security concerns for Azmi, who reportedly received death threats following his remarks. An unidentified caller allegedly issued threats and used abusive language, prompting the Mumbai Police to register an FIR and initiate an investigation.
This incident has reignited debates about historical narratives and their influence on contemporary politics in Maharashtra. The ongoing investigation by the Mumbai Police will determine the legal ramifications of Azmi’s statements.
