Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that it remains difficult to predict a timeline for the end of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, but he reiterated his confidence in Russia’s eventual victory. During his interaction with BRICS editors at his Novo-Ogaryovo residence, he acknowledged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concern and expressed gratitude for Modi’s diplomatic efforts.
Putin also endorsed Modi’s characterization of BRICS as a “non-Western, but not anti-Western” entity, emphasizing the importance of the grouping in providing an alternative platform to Western-dominated international systems. The 16th BRICS Summit, scheduled for October 22-23 in Kazan, Russia, will see Modi and other leaders discussing global issues and further expanding the BRICS agenda.
Addressing the Ukraine crisis, Putin reiterated that NATO and the US are primarily responsible for provoking the conflict, accusing them of using Ukrainian forces as proxies. He highlighted the challenges of setting a deadline for the war’s conclusion, describing such efforts as “counterproductive.” He stated, “The Ukrainian army alone cannot operate the precision weapons they have; it’s NATO professionals behind these operations.”
Putin also hinted at a potential cultural collaboration with India, expressing an interest in promoting Indian films in Russia. He referred to India as a significant partner and indicated that cinema, along with pharmaceuticals and automotive sectors, could be areas of future cooperation.
Regarding BRICS expansion, Putin welcomed the inclusion of new members—Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia—and confirmed that BRICS remains open to further enlargement. “The doors are not closed, and even non-member countries will benefit economically from our group’s developments,” he remarked.
Amid discussions on a unified BRICS currency, Putin admitted the process was progressing slowly. He also expressed concern over the escalating Israel-Palestine conflict and confirmed an invitation to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for upcoming BRICS events.
