NEW DEHI: Former British Prime Minister David Cameron recently highlighted India’s potential to mediate in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, citing the nation’s growing diplomatic influence and credibility. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi, Cameron underscored the importance of recognizing Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence in any mediation efforts. He pointed to India’s balanced approach and its diplomatic engagements, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as evidence of India’s active role in pursuing dialogue-based solutions.

Cameron’s remarks come at a time when India’s global profile is expanding significantly. He expressed support for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), calling for reforms that would better reflect today’s geopolitical realities. According to Cameron, India’s inclusion would not only be appropriate but necessary, given its economic growth and contributions to international peacekeeping efforts.

Cameron also praised India’s increasing participation in global organizations such as the Quad and G20, suggesting that these moves are crucial for addressing pressing global challenges like climate change and international security. He noted India’s strides in green technology and its commitment to sustainable development, positioning it as a leader in both economic and environmental fields.

India’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly its diplomatic outreach to both sides, aligns with its advocacy for peace and negotiated settlements, as reiterated by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. As Cameron emphasized, India’s credibility and influence make it a suitable candidate to mediate and contribute to resolving one of the most complex conflicts in recent history.(Input from agencies)
