Ranchi: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has unveiled its first list of 35 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, scheduled for November 13 and 20, with results expected on November 23. Chief Minister Hemant Soren is set to contest from Barhait, a constituency he previously won by a significant margin of 25,740 votes over his BJP rival in 2019. His wife, Kalpana Soren, will represent the Gandey segment, having recently secured victory in a by-election there.
The JMM’s candidate list highlights the party’s strategy amid ongoing accusations from the BJP regarding dynasty politics. In response, Hemant Soren stated, “Our commitment to the development of Jharkhand remains unwavering. We will ensure inclusive governance and address the concerns of tribal communities”. Alongside Soren, notable candidates include his brother Basant Soren, contesting from Dumka, and Assembly Speaker Rabindranath Mahto from Nala, who has held his seat since 2005.
The JMM is part of the broader INDIA bloc alliance, which includes the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Hemant Soren recently confirmed that the alliance has reached a consensus to contest 70 of the 81 seats together, emphasizing unity among coalition partners. “We are moving forward as an alliance, presenting a strong front to the electorate,” Soren remarked, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the INDIA.
However, the JMM’s familial ties have drawn criticism from BJP leaders. Spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo criticized the party’s focus on family, labeling it as “parivarvaad” or family rule. Despite this, the JMM is confident in its grassroots support, positioning itself as a strong contender in the upcoming elections, with key campaign themes centered around regional development, tribal rights, and employment opportunities.
As the election date nears, the JMM’s candidate list marks a significant step in its strategy to retain power in Jharkhand, navigating the complexities of coalition politics while addressing voter concerns effectively.
