Massive Airtel Network Disruption Hits South India on 13th May

The disruption hit major cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Madurai, and parts of Kerala, sparking a wave of complaints across social media platforms.

On Tuesday evening, Airtel users across several parts of South India faced significant network issues, with many unable to make voice calls. The disruption hit major cities like Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Madurai, and parts of Kerala, sparking a wave of complaints across social media platforms.

AirtelWhile mobile data continued to function for most users, the ability to make or receive phone calls was severely affected. The issue reportedly began around 7:00 pm, with users posting updates and expressing frustration over frequent call drops and complete call failures. Despite the passage of over two hours, the issue was not fully resolved as of 10:00 pm.

Down detector, a real-time outage tracker, recorded over 8,400 reports related to Airtel network disruptions by 9:00 pm. A heat map on the website confirmed that the affected areas were concentrated across South India, especially in urban pockets of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Kerala.

Airtel confirms temporary disruption and begins restoration efforts

In response to the surge of complaints, Airtel issued an official statement confirming that a temporary disruption had occurred in specific regions. A spokesperson from the telecom giant stated,

We regret to inform that Airtel is currently facing a temporary network disruption in certain areas of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Our technical teams are diligently working to address the issue and restore services as quickly as possible.”Airtel

Although the cause of the disruption has not been made public, the company assured users that restoration efforts are ongoing and that services will be back to normal soon.

Users turned to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share their concerns, with hashtags related to the outage trending in regional circles. Many complained about the lack of communication from customer service and demanded a timeline for the return of normal services.

Interestingly, the outage seems to have primarily affected voice services. Internet access, including social media apps and messaging platforms, remained stable for most users, suggesting that the disruption may be linked to a voice call routing or switching system issue.
