Breaking News

New Delhi: In a landmark move to improve digital public service delivery for Indian-origin citizens abroad, the Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, today launched the revamped Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Portal at an official event held in New Delhi. The launch is a part of the Government of India’s broader vision, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, to offer world-class immigration facilities to the growing global diaspora.

Present at the event were senior officials including the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), and other dignitaries from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), reflecting the strategic importance of the platform in India’s evolving immigration and diaspora outreach framework.

A Technologically-Advanced, User-Centric Portal

The newly launched OCI Portal, accessible at Online OCI services, is equipped with a modern user interface, a host of advanced features, and improved security protocols. It aims to provide a seamless, intuitive experience for over 5 million existing OCI cardholders as well as for new applicants.

Highlighting the significance of the upgrade, Shri Amit Shah noted, “Many Indian-origin citizens live across the globe. It is our duty to ensure they face no inconvenience while visiting or staying in India. The new portal is designed with that very commitment in mind—efficiency, accessibility, and ease.”

OCI Scheme: Bridging India with Its Global Diaspora

Launched in 2005 through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955, the OCI scheme provides a lifelong visa and various privileges to eligible Persons of Indian Origin. However, those who are or were citizens of Pakistan or Bangladesh, or whose parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents were citizens of these countries, remain ineligible.

Since 2013, the OCI portal has been active in over 180 Indian missions worldwide and 12 Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs), processing over 2,000 applications daily. With the recent technological leap, India reaffirms its commitment to creating a more inclusive and accessible interface for its overseas citizens.

Looking Ahead

The revamped portal marks a significant digital governance milestone. It not only ensures enhanced functionality and improved user experience but also symbolizes India’s commitment to maintaining deep cultural and emotional ties with its diaspora.

With this step, the Government of India sends a strong message to the global Indian community: that the nation values their contributions, respects their identity, and is ready to walk alongside them—digitally and diplomatically.
