Agartala, Tripura | June 2, 2025 — In its continued crackdown on narcotics trafficking in the North Eastern Region (NER), the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully intercepted a significant consignment of methamphetamine tablets in Tripura. This operation is yet another testament to the agency’s vigilant and relentless campaign against drug smuggling in the sensitive border areas of India’s northeast.
Midnight Interception Near Teliamura
On the night of May 31, 2025, acting on specific intelligence inputs, officers of the DRI Agartala Regional Unit, in coordinated support with the 28 Battalion Assam Rifles, flagged down a suspicious Maruti Wagon-R near Teliamura, situated on the route between Dharmanagar (North Tripura) and Agartala (West Tripura). The interception took place in the late hours, hinting at the traffickers’ attempts to avoid detection under the cover of darkness.
Massive Methamphetamine Haul Concealed in Vehicle
Upon a detailed search of the intercepted vehicle, authorities discovered seven brick-shaped packets ingeniously hidden beneath the bonnet, specifically tucked under the cowl cover. The concealed packages were found to contain methamphetamine tablets weighing approximately 7 kilograms.
According to DRI estimates, the market value of the seized narcotics stands at Rs. 7 crore in the international grey drug market. This haul indicates the growing use of Tripura’s routes as a transit corridor for trafficking methamphetamine, especially given the state’s proximity to international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Two Arrests Made Under NDPS Act
Two individuals involved in the illegal transportation of the drug consignment have been arrested. The seized vehicle and the narcotic tablets have been taken into custody under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The law prescribes stringent punishments, including rigorous imprisonment up to 10 years, for those found guilty of drug trafficking and related offenses.
Steady Rise in Meth Seizures in 2025
The latest seizure adds to a growing list of busts by the DRI this year. Since January 2025, the agency has seized methamphetamine consignments worth Rs. 28.74 crore in Tripura alone. With seven individuals arrested as part of ongoing investigations, it is clear that the DRI is focusing its efforts intensively on the region to dismantle the nexus of organized narcotics syndicates.
Conclusion: Tightening the Noose on Drug Trafficking
The successful interdiction near Teliamura not only underlines the operational efficiency of the DRI but also demonstrates the increasing coordination between central and paramilitary forces like the Assam Rifles in the fight against narcotics trafficking in the North East. With growing international demand for synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine, vigilance and strong enforcement measures remain critical.
The DRI’s sustained operations, community vigilance, and inter-agency collaboration will be crucial in curbing the illicit drug trade and safeguarding the socio-economic fabric of the region.
